New York Knicks are known with the legacy of being heroes and heroics for more than 6 decades. They are a licensed affiliate of the National Basketball Association (NBA) and became one of the legendary teams in basketball. It all started on June 6, 1946 after the Madison Square Garden gained a contract with the newly-formed American Basketball Association. Ned Irish who is preserved in the Springfield’s Basketball Hall of Fame founded the Knicks and became one of the baby teams’ pioneers. The Knickerbockers had their debut on the 2st of November 1946 when they edged the Toronto Huskies with 68-66 at the famous Maple Leaf Gardens.

Neil Cohalan, a former Manhattan College instructor was the team’s first head coach. Ossie Schectman, Jake Weber, Stan Stutz, Leo Gottlieb and Ralp Kaplowitz made up the initial starting line-up.

The team was able to make 3 consecutive journeys to the finals during the years 1951 to 1953. However, they were constantly deprived of the cup for three times: first is by Rochester, and for the years 1952 and ’53, by the Minneapolis Lakers.

A new era for the team started during the spring of 2008 with Donnie Walsh as the president and Mike D’Antoni as the head coach. Under their leadership, New York’s team faces each year with a promise of climbing higher.
